Screen Printing reaches Clark County: How it works & its Benefits

Hey there Clark County folks! Did you know that screen printing has been around us for longer than we know? Its history goes way back to the 18th century and today, screen printing has been deemed as the heart and soul of many bulk printing operations. With it, you get to print any design on almost any kind of surface like fabric, paper, glass, wood, card, plastic, or even leather. But what is screen printing and how does it work?

The Process

Screen printing also known as silkscreen printing involves the transferring of a stenciled design on a flat surface with the use of ink, a mesh screen, and a squeegee (a rubber blade). In this age of digital advancement, screen printing has evolved tremendously wherein its process can already be done by a machine other than by hand! Either manually or by a machine, the process of silkscreen printing remains the same. Take a look at the step-by-step process below:

  • The process starts with creating the design. Once the design has been finalized, it will then be printed onto a transparent acetate film that will be used to develop the screen or stencil.
  • The next step then begins with selecting the screen and mesh count that will depend on the design to be printed. A higher mesh count results in finer details while preserving a fair coating of ink. Lower mesh count on the other hand, lets the ink flow through due to wider openings.
  • Exposing the emulsion now follows. Here, the transparent acetate film is placed on the emulsion-coated mesh screen placed carefully under a bright light. This results in the hardening and development of the emulsion.
  • Once the screen has been dried, the stencil is now ready to be used. However, if there are any touch-ups required, it will be done by the printer to ensure that the imprint would look like the original design as much as possible.
  • The materials will then be positioned on the printing board, ready to be printed.
  • This is where the design comes to life. When the desired ink color is added on top of the screen, the squeegee will evenly distribute the ink along with the length of the screen. The ink then presses through the open areas of the stencil, transferring the design to the product beneath it.
  • Finally, the printed product is heat-cured which can be done by letting it pass through a dryer that makes the design long-lasting and reduces fading.

Benefits of Screen Printing

There is a huge variety of printing styles to choose from. It can be flexographic printing, surface printing, gravure printing, or even digital printing. But why is screen printing on top of the list? Here’s why:

Economical

Screen printing is cost-effective especially when it comes to bulk orders. Once the set-up has been finalized, it makes it faster and easier to print items at high volumes. It typically means that the more you print, the lower the unit cost becomes!

Vibrant Colors

In order to bring a design to life, it also needs to look as lively and as vibrant as possible. Screen printing does just that. It produces vibrant and bolder colors that are tricky to replicate with the other printing techniques. Its usage of separate layers enables each color to preserve its actual brilliance.

All-around printing process

Screen printing is not limited to just fabrics. It is highly versatile and it can be used in printing designs on other surfaces such as plastics, wood, glass, or even metals. This is one of the main reasons why many industries use screen printing in their productions. It gives them the freedom they need in printing designs.

Screen printing does the magic of bringing creativity to life. Its feasible and economic method of transferring designs makes it the best choice out of all the printing techniques.
